Even though I plan on getting all of the 50s wife books, etc. I figured the best way to start is just to start. I followed jen’s daily chore list today (http://www.jenbutneverjenn.com/2010/05/keeping-of-house-1950s-style.html). It was pretty overwhelming. One of the best things I did do was set our “table”for the first time with our table cloths we received from our wedding. We didn’t get any causal ones, so my DH has been apprehensive about using them. I figured what better way to make my not so fancy card table look homey until we can afford a nice one? I must say the linens plus the flowers given to me from DH make it look so cute! I guess I won’t be complaining about not having a dining room table for a while. I was handling the cleaning ok until I reached the weekly chore. I decided that Fridays will be my bathroom day. Jen didn’t have her specific layout of a detailed cleaning list, so I googled one. My bathroom. Was. DISGUSTING. It took me an hour to clean it. I used so many products and went through so many rags, you would think that I have never cleaned in there. Just so you all don’t think I’m a slob, I clean it 4 times a week. I guess i just wasn’t paying attention to detail. I am not looking forward to next Friday. It was definitely intense. The other hard part of the day was that I had to work 2x as fast because I had school tonight. I had to leave at 4 for my bus. I tried to be as cute as possible with dinner since I wouldn’t be there. I made Tacos and salad and laid everything out on a tray in the fridge with a note telling my husband that I will miss not having dinner tonight and that I love him. I hope that makes up for my lack of not being able to greet him at the door when he comes in. I am so exhausted I feel like I’ll sleep for days. I am very proud of myself for getting up and starting my goal to the new me!

I <3 him.

To be or not to be…a 1950s housewife

I am in love with theIDEA of the 1950s women - or, at least, how they are portrayed. I love their fashion, beauty and the way they pushed for family life. I know some of you are probably thinking how could a woman who is pursuing her education, be in love with such an unequal time for women? I do not in any way agree with the way women were expected to keep their mouths shut, but I do admire there ambitious attitudes to achieve success and perfection.

I have been contemplating the idea of trying to emulate some of the practices that these women have and see how it would benefit my marriage. I have started to do research on the 1950s women before I begin. I came across a blog called the “50s housewife experiment” (http://www.jenbutneverjenn.com/2010/05/welcome-to-50s-housewife-experiment.html). This woman attempted to emulate the life of a 50s housewife for two weeks. Her results overall were that her and her husband were more happy. They bonded more and she became very confident in her home.

This made me to attempt to at least try this lifestyle even more. I dont know if I am crazy. I am just so disgusted with how women carry themselves in today’s generation. I am sick of people expecting marriages to fail. I want to be like these women who kept themselves and their families together.

Well…I guess the title is misguided. I am going to do this. I am going to start by following the plans Jen did in her experiment. If I enjoy it after a month, I will continue on to a retro life! When I do start to try this new lifestyle, there will be some differences I won’t change. I will continue to cook healthy meals, continue to work and continue my workout regimen.

For now I am going to find the same reading materials to study as Jen did. I am also going to start shopping for more dresses, etc. I am not necessarily going to dress right out of the 1950s, but I do like to wear nice, girly dresses.

More updates later…

While I’ve heard TOMS shoes are comfy, they’ve always looked a bit “manly” to me. Enter, the TOMS ballet flats - how cute are these? They come in a variety of colours, including this pretty grey linen.
